Apply for EIN Online: Free IRS Step-by-Step Guide
The IRS lets eligible U.S.-based applicants get an EIN directly online for $0. Use the eligibility navigator first, prepare the information the IRS asks for, then open the official IRS tool only when you are ready to finish the application in one session.
Can you apply for an EIN online for free?
Yes. If your organization is domestic, its principal place of business is in the United States or U.S. territories, and the responsible party has an SSN or ITIN, the IRS online EIN tool is generally the fastest route. The application is free, must be completed in one session, expires after 15 minutes of inactivity, and—if approved—issues the EIN immediately online.
EIN Online Eligibility + Readiness Navigator
This tool separates two questions that the old page mixed together: Can you use the IRS online tool? and Are you prepared to finish it without timing out? Answer the eligibility questions first. If the online route fits, the readiness checklist will open.
Before you open the IRS tool
Check each preparation item. Do not enter sensitive numbers here—just confirm that you have the information available.
Enjoys-life does not need your SSN or ITIN to help you understand this process. Enter sensitive taxpayer information only in the official IRS application or other systems you independently trust and intend to use.
Who Can Apply for an EIN Online?
The old page called this a guide for “US Citizens.” That is too narrow and can mislead readers. The current IRS online tool is based on the applicant's U.S. connection and the responsible party's taxpayer ID—not citizenship alone.
- The organization must be domestic, meaning formed or created in the U.S. or U.S. territories.
- Its principal place of business must be in the U.S. or U.S. territories.
- The applicant must be the responsible party in control of the entity or an authorized representative.
- The responsible party must have an SSN or ITIN for the online route.
- If the principal place of business is outside the U.S., use the IRS international phone, fax or mail process instead of the online tool.
The IRS specifically tells corporations and LLCs to register the entity with the state first. This helps ensure the EIN is tied to the correct legal name and formation information.
Online vs Fax vs Mail: Current EIN Application Methods
For an eligible U.S.-based applicant, the IRS recommends applying electronically if possible. Fax and mail remain useful when the online route does not fit or does not work.
IRS Online Tool
If approved, the EIN is issued online. The tool is free, one-session only and has a 15-minute inactivity timeout.
Fax Form SS-4
For a U.S./DC principal location, the current domestic fax number is 855-641-6935. Provide a return fax number.
Mail Form SS-4
Mail to IRS, Attn: EIN Operation, Cincinnati, OH 45999 for U.S./DC applicants. Processing can take longer during high inventory.
As of the August 2026 IRS page, the online tool is available Eastern Time: Monday–Friday 6:00 a.m.–1:00 a.m. the next day, Saturday 6:00 a.m.–9:00 p.m., and Sunday 6:00 p.m.–12:00 a.m. Availability can change, so the official IRS page remains the source of truth.
How to Apply for an EIN Online: The Practical Flow
The IRS interface may change over time, so this guide focuses on the decisions and information that remain important rather than pretending every screen label will stay identical.
- Start from the official IRS EIN page. Confirm that the URL is on IRS.gov before entering personal information. The IRS does not charge an EIN application fee.
- Confirm the entity type. For a state-formed limited liability company, identify the business as an LLC and answer the member-count questions accurately. Federal tax treatment depends on the number of members and any tax election.
- Identify the responsible party. Use the individual who owns, controls or exercises effective control over the entity and its assets. Nominees should not be listed as the responsible party.
- Enter the legal business information carefully. Use the legal name from the state filing. IRS systems apply specific character and length rules, so special characters may need IRS-approved formatting.
- Answer the reason, date, employee and activity questions. Use the facts that actually describe your business. Do not choose an answer merely because it sounds faster or more common.
- Review before submission. A wrong legal name, responsible party, member count or tax-classification answer can create tax-record problems later.
- Save the EIN assignment notice. The IRS online process lets taxpayers view, print and save the EIN assignment notice at the end of the session. Keep it with your permanent business records.
Form SS-4 Fields That Matter for an LLC
If you apply by fax or mail—or simply want to understand the information behind the EIN process—use the current Form SS-4 and its instructions. The old page had several field numbers shifted, so this revision corrects them.
Use the entity's legal name. For a state-formed LLC, keep it consistent with the formation record, subject to IRS business-name formatting rules.
Provide the mailing address and, when different, the physical street address/location information requested on the form.
Identify the qualified responsible party. IRS guidance says the responsible party must be a person, not an entity, except for government entities.
Indicate that the applicant is an LLC, enter the number of members, and identify whether the LLC was organized in the United States.
For a single-member LLC accepting disregarded status, current instructions say to use “Other” and write “disregarded entity.” A domestic multi-member LLC accepting partnership classification generally checks Partnership. Corporate-election paths have different instructions.
Select one reason that accurately fits the application, such as started new business, hired employees, banking purpose, changed organization type, purchased a going business, or another applicable reason.
Enter the actual start/acquisition date under the IRS instructions. This is not simply “today” and should not be guessed.
Enter the last month of the accounting or tax year. Individuals generally use a calendar year; partnership tax-year rules can be more specific.
Answer the expected employee count and related payroll questions based on your actual hiring/payroll situation.
Select the broad category and describe the principal line of business in enough detail for the IRS to understand what the business does.
Line 18 asks whether the applicant entity was issued an EIN previously. The signature and third-party-designee sections are separate from Line 18.
What to Do After the IRS Issues Your EIN
Your EIN can be used immediately for many ordinary business needs, but not every IRS system updates instantly.
| Action | Timing | Important note |
|---|---|---|
| Save the EIN assignment notice | Immediately | View, print or save it at the end of the online session and keep permanent copies. |
| Use EIN for many business needs | Immediately | The IRS says it can generally be used for needs such as opening a bank account, applying for business licenses and filing a paper tax return. |
| E-file / electronic payments / TIN matching | Allow up to 2 weeks | The EIN may take up to two weeks to enter IRS permanent records for these electronic systems. |
| Protect EIN records | Ongoing | Keep the notice with formation and tax records; avoid publishing the EIN unnecessarily. |
| Update responsible party/address later | Within IRS deadline | Use Form 8822-B when required; responsible-party changes must be reported within 60 days. |
The IRS now describes CP575 as a digital notice available through Business Tax Account and says it can substitute for the old CP575A-J notice series and Letter 147C. The original CP575A-J cannot be recreated, so keeping your EIN records remains important.
Common EIN Application Mistakes to Avoid
- Using a paid middleman because the site looks official. The IRS EIN itself is free.
- Applying before the LLC is formed. The IRS tells LLCs and corporations to register with the state first.
- Using the wrong responsible party. A nominee is not a responsible party; current IRS guidance generally requires an individual person.
- Assuming citizenship decides online eligibility. It does not. Check the domestic/principal-place and SSN/ITIN requirements.
- Using outdated IRS hours or fax numbers from old articles. The IRS expanded online availability and the current domestic fax number for U.S./DC applicants is 855-641-6935.
- Guessing SS-4 classifications. A single-member disregarded LLC, multi-member partnership and LLC electing corporate treatment do not all complete the classification section the same way.
- Assuming every IRS system recognizes the EIN immediately. Some electronic uses can take up to two weeks.
Does Every LLC Need an EIN?
No. A single-member LLC that is disregarded for federal income-tax purposes does not automatically need its own EIN solely to report income on the owner's federal return. However, the LLC needs its own EIN for employment taxes and certain excise taxes, and other business situations can make an EIN practically useful or required by another institution. Multi-member LLCs taxed as partnerships use an EIN for the partnership's federal filings.
For a single-member disregarded LLC, IRS instructions for information reporting can require the owner's name and SSN or EIN rather than the disregarded LLC's EIN. The correct TIN depends on the tax form and tax treatment.
Primary IRS Sources & Verification Notes
This revision intentionally removes “verified forever” wording. EIN rules, portal hours and IRS workflow can change. The following IRS pages are the primary references used for this August 2026 rebuild.
The IRS recommends forming an LLC with the state before applying for its EIN. If you want a formation service instead of filing directly with your state, you can review Enjoys-life's Northwest option. You do not need a formation service to obtain an EIN from the IRS.

This guide is maintained against primary IRS sources. The August 2026 revision corrected outdated online-tool hours, the domestic fax number, citizenship-based eligibility framing, several SS-4 field references, and older EIN-confirmation guidance.
